FDA-Approved Hair Loss Remedies
Hair loss is a widespread and stressful phenomenon. Lately, there has been growing number of people suffering from hair thinning and hair loss. So it is very important to create new therapeutic medicine to prevent hair loss and to improve hair growth. Since ancient times, many doctors have been tried to treat baldness, however, only two drugs so far have been approved for hair loss treatment by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration).
Minoxidil
Minoxidil (saled brand Rogaine) was initially synthesized as a potassium channel opener and was further developed as an anti-hypertensive. Minoxidil has been confirmed to be effective both in stimulating new hair growth and in helping to prevent continued hair loss in both men and women.
However, its exact mechanism has not been clearly clarified.
The most frequent adverse side effects of Minoxidil include scalp irritation, which occurs in about 7% of patients using the drug for hair loss treatment, and hypertrichosis, which is noted in women.
Finasteride
Finasteride (saled brand Propecia) was at first used for treatment of prostatic hypertrophy and later was found that it effective as hair stimulant. In spite of its outstanding hair growing effect, its use is narrow because of potential side effect especially in women.
Because of potential for teratogenic effects in male fetuses, Finasteride is not FDA approved for use in women.
The major side effects of Finasteride therapy are sexual side effects such as lessen libido and erectile/ejaculatory dysfunction, which occurred in fewer than 2% of men in one trial. In one study, these harmful side effects were reversed with cessation of the medication for hair loss treatment.
The join useing of Finasteride and Minoxidil has been studied in the animal model. The studies had shown that combined use of Finasteride and Minoxidil had better effects on hair loss than either treatment alone.
