Postmenopause begins after the time of the final menstrual period, whether it was a natural or medically induced menopause, and continues until the end of life. It is defined as stage 1 (early postmenopause) and stage 2 (late postmenopause).
The early postmenopause stage is five years, which includes the first year since the final menstrual period and the next four years.
It is important to understand that menopause is or can be the beginning of a new phase of life, with fewer family obligations, new options, new learning opportunities, and new adventures.

With a proper understanding of perimenopause and menopause, and an adequately informed and respectful health-care practitioner, the majority of menopausal women can be healthy and happy and use this time period as an opportunity to foster a preventive health-care plan and lifestyle as well as an opportunity to assess their life.

Healthy lifestyle in postmenopause

There are a number of steps women in postmenopause can take to stay healthy and feel better.

  • Avoid smoking, caffeine, alcohol, excess salt, and sugar as that foods can worsen hot flashes.
  • Balanced diet is very important. Nutritionists recommend whole grains, cold pressed oils, leafy vegetables, and nuts. Fish and seeds contain essential fatty acids that are important for heart and skin health. Soy foods contain isoflavones, which help minimize postmenopausal symptoms. Choose foods that are low in saturated fat and cholesterol.
  • Get regular exercise. Studies have shown that regular exercise reduces the frequency and severity of hot fl ashes. It also improves mood and sleep, protects against heart disease, and weight-bearing activities strengthen the bones.
  • Ensure adequate calcium intake or take a mineral supplement for bone health; consider fish oils for heart health. Black cohosh and chasteberry can help relieve postmenopausal symptoms.

Following these recommendation you can significantly reduce symptoms of postmenopause.
